Had a Triumph TR-8 Conv. back in the 1980's, and raced a red 911SC driven by a very pretty blonde girl on a little road from Solana Beach into Rancho Santa Fe (just north of San Diego). I was driving fast, the road was twisty and the sun was settling in for the evening, and yet she passed me with a roar. Then on one of the only straight parts of the road (I used to bicycle it all the time and so knew it pretty well), I passed her right back. She kept on my tail easily, as the car was faster than the Triumph.
I took a right hander, slightly uphill and felt the tail drift, then a quick left-hander, just slightly downhill, and lost rear grip and spun completely around - eucalyptus trees on my right, big black BMW in the oncoming lane - did a complete 180 and somehow wound up backwards in the correct lane in a cloud of white smoke (Yokohama A008R's) only to see the red 911 coming right at me! Been impressed with 911 brakes ever since, as she managed to stop before hitting me.
I waived everybody on, slunk into Rancho Santa Fe at about 15mph, feeling embarrassed and foolish and young (which I was). Stopped at the side of the road, put up the top to hide my face from the world, took a moment to wonder at my youth and stupidity, and then headed home.
In the nearly 30 years since, I have never driven so stupidly on the road again. But it is a good memory....
