Throwing a cig into a cup of gasoline indeed will put the cig out.
But esp. in states that don't have the vapor recovery system on the nozzle, go up the nozzle while the gas is pumping into the tank (you know, where you can see the gas fumes furiously rising out from the tank) and take a few good drags on that cig.
Very much a possible kablammo situation.
