My first car was a '67 GTO 400 4 speed. Anyone in any kind of a Porsche knew better than to even try, and they were never a consideration for me. Not even on the radar. My second car was a '66 Plymouth Sport Fury 383 automatic. Same story. My third was a '67 Dodge Coronet R/T 440 automatic. No takers. My fourth was a '69 Dodge Super Bee 383 4 speed that I had built into a pretty much dedicated drag car. I got a taker on that one...
A bunch of us lowlife hotrod punks used to gather in Renton, on the old Renton Loop as we called it, at a Herfy's burger joint. We would choose off there and head out to a place in Tukwilla to race. Well, one night a middle age guy with a girlfriend about our age (early 20's) shows up in a 911 Turbo (we didn't know it was a "930" back then...) and starts bad mouthing all of us punks in our beater old muscle cars. Says his fine piece of German machinery can take any one of us hands down. So they all look to me - game on. We pooled every last cent we had between us (several hundred dollars), he matched it, and we headed for the "track".
I don't know what this guy was thinking. It wasn't even close, like ten car lengths or better not even close. He couldn't handle that, got all pissed, and claimed I jumped the start. So we did it again, only this time I let him get a couple of car lengths out before I even went. I passed him just as I went into third gear, and pulled half a dozen car lengths out on him. This time, he never even stopped, and we never saw him again. And we had beer money for weeks...
