I would have replied "My choice of car should tell you I intend to speed; the presence of the radar detector is merely incidental". 
Seriously, I agree with most here. If you are out in traffic there are enough knuckleheads on the road who will spring the traps ahead of you and that is where the radar detector is valuable. If you are by yourself then you truly are dead meat.
Interestingly, I've been pinged by laser twice in the last year while speeding and neither time could the officer get a reading on me. My car has a 3M clear bra on the nose but, other than that, I don't know why I'm runnin' in stealth mode.
