Joe,
Depends on the car and value.
When I moved to TX I used a little guy I found via a broker.
He does the NY to TX run once a week and hauls only 3 cars at a time on an open trailer.
Shipped two cars with him, the 911 and my beater Bronco, on two separate trips, $600 each.
I had originally planned on driving the 911 down so wear n tear + fuel, between driving and hauling open was comparable. Was winter so hauling was easier for me.
3rd car, the 55' 190SL, I shipped with Horseless Carriage enclosed at $1,500.
So deepening on value of car go with a small privateer or a big name high end carrier.
The options in between can be risky.
You want to know that the car goes on and stays on the same rig end to end. Most damage occurs during loading/unloading.
A lot of companies use the FedEx model. Pick up cars at various locations and drop em in a common yard, then they make up loads going to a common destination.
Efficient for them but it's not unheard of for a vehicle to sit for weeks at a time waiting for a big enough load headed your way. Considering your work schedule that may be highly inconvenient for you.
Probably the most important question you want to ask.
