Tobra- Before cotton most sailing ships used industrial hemp for sails, burlap bags, clothing, paper, etc.
It used to be illegal for farmers to not grow hemp in the 13 colonies.
Seven times more(longer and stronger) fiberous pulp can be farmed than trees. The pesticides/chemicals needed is quite limited compared to many other plant-based products.
