My father in law has the same truck. 5w-40 for 89k and never a problem. The tick is what is said to be a normal engine noise. The only issue with these I have ever seen is it took me 2 days to replace the plugs. about 30 minutes was spent breaking every plug removing them then waiting a day for the "special tool" over nighted from Matco then about 2 hours to remove the broken bits and install them. There was a throttle body issue that Ford wouldnt cover under the extended warranty. They said it needed to be replaced. I removed it and cleaned it 5,000 miles ago and knock on wood its never gone back into limp mode where it did that every 10 miles or so. The plug issue is common with the 5.4l's and a few others. The tool however makes life a breeze removing them after they break. Hope this helps.
