Ideas on 'playhouse' for playroom in house?

With kiddo # 2 due very soon we have rearranged our home by converting the formal dining room into a playroom. In an effort to have something other than a brightly colored room with plastic bins stacked up everywhere I have decided to build a combination playhouse/storage 'building'.

Current concept is a pirates hideout (thought about the front or rear of a pirate ship but the curves are probably way beyond my carpentry skills) with a faux second story Disney style. Size will be roughly 4' x 3' at the base and i've figured the 1st story to be 6' in height with the 2nd story to be recessed somewhat and filling in the remaining 4' to the ceiling. I'm thinking of using wood shutters on the upstairs concealing shallow shelving that could store games and such.

The trick, as i see it, is to use closer to real construction methods and materials and not just paint up a plywood box. For this i would appreciate any input as to what, within reason, might be good to use. I'd like something you might actually see at the Pirates ride at Disney if possible.

Thoughts?

I believe we all make mistakes but I will not validate your poor choices and/or perversions and subsidize the results your actions.
