The LA Times had great Sunday comics. Calvin and Hobbes, the Far Side, BC and Crock, Andy Capp. Doonesbury is still around, and people still whore out Peanuts even though Schultz has been dead a while (he died New Years Eve -- the last day the final Peanuts was to run, IIRC).
I think the problem is fewer news companies syndicate that much anymore, which is how these artist-writers make their bread and butter.
And the PC crap that today's media outlets let seep into their craft doesn't help either.
Doonesbury has been pulled several times for its socio-political insensitivities, and Andy Capp was stopped entirely because the main character (Andy) was a boozing, womanizing, snooker-playing, chain smoking oaf on the British Dole -- a perfect character for today, IMO. Problem is that's another comic where the artist died right alongside the strip.
