You don't have to run MySQL if you don't want, you could use PostGres or something like that. MySQL works wonders simply because it its powerful enough for 90% of web based applications, extremely fast (much faster than any other SQL variant) and pretty well supported. The whole MySQL, Apache and PHP combination is pretty good.

I have found anything Microsoft a big headache, but then again, nothing is perfect.
