Not a bad theory. I have a Saab for the reasons you list (sort of). For those who don't remember, Saab rally cars used to be common.

As much fun as it might be, I don't drive my 911 in snow or on gravel/dirt roads. (Maybe if my 911 wasn't shiny black...) I do, however, have a set of dedicated winter tires for my Saab.
Oh, and if I had to replace the Saab (so far it has "only 149K miles, so it may be awhile) it would probably be with a WRX 5-door.
After driving the 911, I really don't feel like driving a car with the ignition key in a "normal" location.
