Use your preferred solvent. Mine is diesel fuel. You are then supposed to recoat the filter with a light oil. Not sure what's in those spray cans. The diesel will leave a little oily residue.

I supposed just about any oil will work. And my crankcase breathers are hooked up to mine, so they get fresh 20W50 vapor all the time....

Got it! Buy one of those pump spray bottles from one of the kitchen places (the ones for olive oil), Mark it for car use only. (If you have one, buy the wife a nice new one and use the old one. This is worth a few points!) Fill it with engine oil, pump and spray a light coating on.
