It was a Brit thing first I would surmise. You guys get a lot of tastes from the home island.
It's a very salty yeast extract, so I'm not sure that it is that healthy. Plenty of other options for Vit B complex. For salt lovers, it is heaven. I used to eat that stuff off a knife - no need for toast.

Bovril I remember as mostly a drink (beef based).
