It was 3 years before I was born, but oh the stories I've heard! My father in law tells it from a high-school perspective: he was working at a garage or gas station or something, and he said the streets were completely empty. He was sent on a beer run sometime during the game, and said it was like a ghost town. Everyone - really, pretty much everyone - was glued to a TV set. Closest thing I've ever experienced was the Challenger in 1986 - they turned on the TV in my classroom - the only time that I ever remember live TV on in class. (I believe the opening of Berlin Wall was on a weekend, or after school hours - because I remember watching that live, but not in class)
