I have an over-the-door one. It doesn't mess the finish up at all, but it's never been used once in my house. We don't have a single doorway it works in - they're all too wide, too low ceiling, too narrow, whatever. And our house isn't some weird strange contraption, it's a fairly standard 25 year old two story detached home. Make sure you get measurements before you buy one.
