Several years ago Bruce Hornsby was in town opening for Bonnie Raitt. He'd closed his show about the time I was making my way into the backstage area. I was trundling along with my camera gear, aggravated because of having to shoot another concert... in the news business "shooting a concert" means you get the first two or three songs and then you're booted. It's much more work than it's worth in most cases.
Anyway, I was making my way inside the coliseum, head down as I walked, when I noticed at a short distance a pair of shoes headed my way. I glanced up and it was Hornsby walking back to his hotel, only about a half-block away, alone.
Normally I never made too big of a deal over celebs but this time I stopped and told him how much I liked his work. He stopped and we struck up a short conversation.
He was one of the most genuine, appreciative musicians I have ever had the chance to speak with. A real pro. And a heck of a nice guy.
