I was speaking from a design standpoint. In which case the piston and shaft are one piece and no addition parts are needed. In a conversion you are making up design deficiencies and need more parts to make it work.

A properly designed piston system is mostly self cleaning and durable for several hundred thousand rounds before wear becomes a factor in reliability.
