Ruger seems to be the American firearms manufacturer of my lifetime. Where the others have sat on their collective laurels - or more like asses - continuing to try to peddle their 50-100 year old designs, Ruger stands alone as the one that has continued to improve their existing lines and venture forth into new ones as well.
It strikes me that the majority of firearms I've purchased in the last decade, "using" firearms (as opposed to purty wall-hangers) have been Rugers. Doesn't hurt that I'm a single shot and single action man, but even my "other" guns have been predominantly Ruger, save for Marlin lever guns.
I've been very impressed with Ruger quality of late. Granted, fit and finish will never be Smith, Colt, or pre-'64 Winchester quality, but these are functional, using firearms. In light of that, I would hesitate to buy the Ruger if I were into those kinds of guns.
