Lipos have potential danger if you do not use them as intended - they cannot take the abuse that a Nicd can and don't just die like a nimh does. They release hot gas when over charged, over discharged or somehow mishandled (shorted - which would qualify as over discharged).
I've never had one go up on me though I have had them puff up a bit.
Lithiums are getting better and better and lighter and lighter for the power they provide.
A123 cells are great too but don't carry as high a nominal voltage (3.3v vs 3.7v on lithium) and while there isn't a huge difference - every bit counts.
A123 cells are extremely stable and can take much more mishandling than traditional lipos. They are however slightly heavier though still lighter than Nicd and Nimh batteries. They are very popular and gaining on lipos in the RC world.
