This has been debated ad nauseum on one of the motorcycle forums I visit. Every so often you get some kid on there bragging about how "b1tchin" his bike looks because he's added some blackout/tint/whatever crap to his lenses. Invariably he gets massacred because of the utter stupidity of it (anything that reduces your visibility - particularly on a motorcycle - makes the likelihood of an accident higher). And on motorcycles in particular, being "less visible" directly correlates to "greater chance of being killed". There's absolutely no difference here except that in a large pickup truck you might walk away where on a bike, you most likely won't.

Something else to consider is it may not just be yourself and your car you're putting at risk with this stuff. You might inadvertently be endangering someone else. Just something to think about. I have a bit of a problem with people putting their vanity above their own safety (stupid) or the safety of others (flat-out irresponsible). Sounds like someone needs to grow up and think about these things a bit.

There are strict standards as to how many lumens are required from both headlamps and taillights. Anything applied to the lenses (film, tint, dirt, snow, etc.) reduces that and directly increases the likelihood of a crash. So if you want to look like a stupid punk kid, go ahead. It's your car. But make sure to post pictures of the ticket when you get one or of the back end of your truck all smashed in when some doofus plows into the back of you.
