I think the amazing thing is that the Dakota hadn't been scrapped by that time.
A lot of it is the environment the vehicle lands in (climate, roads, owner) once it hits the road. You can wreck anything if you don't take care of it. You can nurse a POS a long way.
Personally, I think any claims of amazing mileage are diminished once the engine or transmission are opened up.
To think: in order to hit that kind of mileage, someone had to spend around 10,000 hours in the seat of that thing.
Now THAT's amazing.
