My daily is a MK3 VR6 Golf (very similar to the MK4 platform up front). I changed the front wheel bearings about 4 years ago.
The hardest part was get the stub axles out. I had to remove the entire assembly from the car and use a hydrologic press to get them out. It's not as bad as it sounds as you can leave the brake callipers in place and undo the CV joints at the gearbox. Then remove the shock absorbers, springs and lower A arms... Steering rods and it's out.

I also have a Bentley manual for my car and that makes everything that much easier.
