How about instead of a flat twin with water cooling, a flat 4-cylinder air-cooled.
1200-1500cc, somewhere in there. Each cylinder size would only be about 300-350cc with smaller, lighter pistons. And the DOHC would be easy with the cam chain or gears running between the cylinders.
Totally different kind of bike but when Honda took the GoldWing from a flat four to a flat six, it extended the life of the machine up to now, about another 20 years.
I'll bet it could be made light enough to still be a sport bike, have great power, and retain most of the flat format characterisitics. The exhaust however would have to exit down instead of front-rear.
Or maybe I didn't get enough sleep last night.
