Really though, once the novelty wears off I think a big brute of an engine in a bugeye wouldn't be all that much fun. Something smaller & high-revving would appeal more to me. Wans't there a company putting Suzuki 1.3 twin cam 16v engines in sprites, with a 5speed? Something like that would be a hoot.

I very strongly agree.
I also think a lot of these suggestions may be interesting, but the end result would be a car that is slower and poorer handling than the donor car. And one that can't even keep up with a tweaked ricer econobox.
Unless you also redo the suspension, the brakes, the frame, well - re-engineer the entire car.
A turbo Audi motor? a Jag 3.8? Hmmm... price of engine versus price/value of car.
And how much work do you really want? For example, the original SHO motor was a sidewinder front-wheel drive. That would take a LOT of engineering to rework for your application.
A-H Sprites & MG Midgets are what they are. They will never be a modern performance car, or even close. Enjoy it for what it is.
Btw, I've done some engine swaps, and I'm an ex-Brit car guy (TR3A, TR6, TR8).
