Yeah, I think you can do much better and with a functioning bicycle. You should check out a dedicated bicycle forum - there are several on the internet. I'm not well versed with mountain bikes, but I know I've seen really nice rigs on the low side of $400 that are at least half this bike's age. And everything works.
