Thanks for the input. I went ahead and bought a 99 996 with a factory-replaced engine 8K miles ago.
After struggling with an SC Targa for a few years and enduring the arrogance of a car maker who could not meet the performance, amenities and price of a Toyota, I have to say I like the 996 so far -- and it's not even one of their highly rated model years. (BTW, I'm also the guy who raised the BS flag with Harleys, because I was one of the few people who actually rode and worked on them, rather than bringing it to the dealer when there was a problem.)
We'll see if it can bear utilitarian duty of daily driving with no primping and pampering. For an $80K+ car, you gotta expect a substantive return, and for quite a few years, right?
