Personally I'd like to see you switch to Drupal or Plone.
Not as 'turnkey" as Joomla, requires more more initial work to customize but worth the effort.
Joomla is a good product if you use it out of the box.
Once you start getting into 3rd party modules/plugins and heavy customization it can get bloated and horrifically slow.
Need to look at your templates, may be as simple as commenting out some includes.
