I only have 12k miles on my 97 748 but the common issues were:
1. Voltage regulators - not enough output, burn out regularly. Mine has been sitting forevah because I have not had the motivation to fix.
2. Clutch slave seal - they leak. Easy fix to backdate the oring.
Never heard of engine nightmares though. Just keep up on the valve adjusts.
