+1 for what sherwood said. What do you have? I've been on Macs for 6 years and have never had a lock up. The only application to ever crash and close has been Microsoft entourage.
If I plug my camera in, it opens iPhoto and is ready to download in about 20 seconds. (I have a an iMac G4)
