We started with the traditional bike with training wheels and never could get my daughter to ride her bike without the training wheels. My Italian Mom mentioned that in Europe they start kids off with push bikes. So we made the switch and in no time my daughter had the whole balance thing dialed in and she was riding her regular bike sans training wheels. It worked for us.
