I have a 1999 996 coupe that I purchased from the original owner in 2001. I have put 60,000 miles on the car (it now has over 80,000 miles). My car was a European delivery US car that the PO picked up in April 1998, so it is one of the early ones. Other than routine maintenance and some leaks in the cooling system plumbing (tanks, hoses and water pump), the car has been a reliable pleasure to own and drive. I have heard the stories of RMS leaks and catastrophic failures, but I have never actually met anyone that this has happened to. I think the 996 represents a tremendous value right now, but I also think that they will continue to decline in value somewhat in the next couple of years, in part because they are so abundant as well as the fact that they do not have the same attributes of the air cooled 911's that enable a broad enthusiast base.
