As a former aviator, I was always taught to "aviate (fly the ship first), navigate, communicate", in that order.
Sully's lack of comms with departure control during the final stages of the flight, and his brevity of cockpit chatter as they ditched is the essence of the "aviate, navigate, communicate" ethos.
The co-pilot is no slouch either.
