My first summer in SoCal I worked for the funny car team of Doheny & Fullerton (the Mustang Mach1 known as "The Trojan Horse") as the general gopher and spent plenty of time around running engines. Follow that with 30 years breathing the toxic fumes of the body shop business and two packs a day until 1994. It's no wonder the Dr. says I've got the lungs of a 90year old coal miner.
I can't imagine why OSHA hasn't stepped in and made breathing apparatus mandatory.
