And, on one of the first items I ever bought, I got screwed. The item was priced low, maybe $5, I was willing to pay $50, someone came in and bid $100 and then retracted the bid as a mistake which meant that my bid automatically shot up to $50. I'm sure that the user had a friend do that to get to my max bid. From there on out, I never put my max bid on ahead of time. 90% of the time I snipe, occasionally, I'll put a very low max bid on something, if I'm not really super interested in winning it.
