That's not for trolling, that's for improving one's Google ranking, etc.
Typically, they won't post, but their profile is available to be slurped by the search engines.
If you look at the profile, it generally has a link to what it is they are hawking, including some specific meta-tags that the search engines use to categorize their (now amazing) popularity.
I usually get about 500 of those attempted account creations per day on a few boards I run.
Before I implemented good account creation protection, I'd find that only a very small minority of them would actually post anything. Those are the "stupid" ones that draw unnecessary attention to themselves, and get themselves deleted.
Trolls, on the other hand, are people that like to push the buttons of other posters in the hopes of getting a (usually overblown) reaction from them. Hence the term "don't feed the trolls"... as in, "don't reply to the obvious bait".
