This is a point, Troy, that has been really grating on me the last few years as I travel and see face to face, exactly how overpriced housing is here in relation to our wages... GRRR...
Legion? Can I suggest a compromise? The garage house (mmm....garage space...) but let your wife pick a few very nice upgrades e.g. kitchen, bath, or appliances. Let her build a bit of her dream in that house and you get the garage space plus both of you have less space to pay for heating and cooling. You might wind up spending a little more money, but both of you could get what you want.
