It sounds like this coach read this 10-year-old right; calling him out in front of his teammates ("peer pressure") seems to have worked.
I don't know if it was "planned" that way; and would agree that it could be damaging to a 10-year-old to be singled out that way, but again, in this case, it seems to have worked and it may have had an effect on the whole team -- with other members working harder so that they wouldn't risk being "called out" in the same way.
The coach may have singled him out because he thought "he could take it."
