If you are trying to learn just maintenance things, you really don't need a spare motor to do that (including valve adjusts, it's not that hard). You can learn as you go on your bike, lots of people DIY these and there is a ton of information available (service manuals, and internet sites).

If you want to tear the whole thing down and build it back up again, that would be a pretty cool project. Whether it's worth $500 . . .
