I checked with my local BMW parts manager and here's what he said

It appears there is a split in September of 96 which is typically the production date for the model year change. So there are grilles for 96 and grilles for 97. ...I just went out and looked at a car and the later grilles we have in stock and say that it is a 97 panel. The earlier car had openings that were more square, the later one sort flares out at the upper outer corner.
