Play calling, particularly on the offense, was horrible all year. It began with Washington, and went downhill from there.
The defense was good up to a point, though I can't really say why Stanford ripped USC a new one on the Trojan's home turf -- I didn't see the game.
Carroll does walk on water -- not just for USC, but for L.A. And that I believe, has gone to his head. The problem is he's wedged himself into the position of "institution." Alumnus love him. He'll be very difficult to get rid of/replace.
As to the quarterback situation, truly Barkley was not ready. But Carroll hadn't the facilities to get a viable alternative after Sanchez. Carroll supposedly begged Sanchez not to leave, but hey, when the NFL calls, one should listen. Sanchez isn't doing too badly. The Jets are 6-6, which is one hell of a lot better than Brady Quinn and the Browns, which are what, 1-11?
