I think the rule is this.
"Never hit a lady"
Of course, if a woman is not behaving like a lady and really deserves it (self defense, defense of another, etc....) But then my rule is the same for everyone. I don't hit people if there's any other way. Fortunately for me, I've never been backed into that corner.
