DO NOT USE A STANDARD TAP!!!! I did and my studs, although useable, are loose in the threads. If it were me, I would thread a nut on the stud, grind off 4mm, chase the stud threads with a thread file and then remove the nut. When you take the nut off you will see whether or not you did a good job with the thread file. If the nut has any resistance when you take it off, screw it back on and clean up the threads with the file a little more until the nut comes off by hand.

A standard tap will take material out of you new inserts and make the hole bigger. There is a "chase" tap available but I don't think that's your problem. Taking 4mm from the embedded end of the stud is not going to effect the integrity of the stud.
