I've lived in the house I'm in now for about 12 years and we've had dogs pretty much the entire time. For the first 8 or 9 years I never saw a tick. All of a sudden a few years back, they were constant. We'd check the dogs after ever trip out to do their business (inside dogs 98% of the time).

I've done some research on getting ticks off.

They say NOT to use a cigarette or vaseline. The reason is that the tick may regurgitate into the wound on his way out which, as you can imagine, is not the best way to avoid disease.

Also, if you squeeze them with pliers, that's kind of the same. That pretty much guaranties that you're emptying the contents of the tick into the wound.

You're supposed to use really fine pointed tweezers and get them parallel to the skin as close to the skin as possible.
