I've never done it, but have known a couple of people who have and they seemed to speak highly of the experience. My understanding is that the normal route is a "trek" in the classic sense, i.e. no mountaineering experience necessary.
FWIW, Everest base camp and advanced base camp are supposed to be crowded and filthy (even for a base camp, which is saying something), albeit with a great view of Everest. Although the base camp is the "goal" of such a trek, I would expect that your fondest memories and experiences from the trip will be in the journey, not the destination.
