Why not go all the way?
Well, unless you're a serious (SERIOUS!) mountaineer, or self entitled, adrenalin seeking, bored member of the elite class, there's not much reason to.

Yes, it is just a hike, albeit a very taxing one, there are no real technical skills required. The real threats come from altitude (your own body), and of course the weather.

The going rate for an Everest ascent these days is about $100k.

There are at least a dozen other life altering ascents out there that probably offer a better risk/reward ratio. So for the money, in my somewhat trail seasoned eyes, Everest, although the highest, is not the best.

You'll need the 15, 30, or 90 day visa that's required, but easily garnered, and cheap, when you land.
