Live by the sword, die by the sword. Image is everything. When you're cashing those paychecks, get used to it. Your public is your boss and determines whether you live or die. "I just want my privacy, and my family needs time to deal with this" doesn't cut it in todays paparazzi driven society.
No one made 20 million for a film in the old days much less to play a sport (in today's dollars), they worked under contract, lived VERY comfortably and all publicity was directed by the Studio or in the case of sports, by the team. Heck, a lot of athletes sold cars in the offseason (albeit as a "draw" to the business, "Hey, I bought my car from Ernie Banks!") The times they are a changin'
it's unfortunate but it goes with the territory.
