how long have you owned your d-40? my buddies d-60 has been FLAWLESS for quite awhile now. not a problem yet. and he uses the HELL OUT OF IT professionally now doing fashion shows/track days/weddings/general stoopid poo pictures. he is a maniac bordering on OCD with that damn thing taking pictures. this really really straight customer of theirs saw a bunch of his pics and made the ever lasting statement........"that bill sure takes some wierd pictures" and we have been HOWLING about that for a couple of years now. ie. pics of flys, dog poop, dogs/katz humping/people of walmart/ signs like "lim-bong liquors"/fat women/fat men/fat kids/fat animals...........you get the idea. anything out of the ordinary he takes a shot of it and we have been in stitches laughing until we cry over some of them. its fun as hell. take a 1000 shots and ya get usually about (3) that are honorable mention!
tempe camera right by asu is the camera utopia here. the guy there stated he has never seen a problem with any of the d-series cameras. as far as service on them he stated to bring every 1-2 years for $35 bucks they will clean out entire body lube whatever and off to the races ya go.
he did state the (2) BIG things to AVOID: water(any kind) and DUST when changing lenses.
other than that a very reliable almost idiot proof 12.3 pixel camera.
