Everyone's eyes are different.
Bluray (1080p) is a noticeable improvement (for me) over 720p or 1080i. And for an even bigger improvement; 10-bit color on a 120hz (or better) --"Motionflow" type interpolation. It is stunning!
To my eye, plasmas flicker like crazy. I don't know how they get away with saying they have high refresh rates - when walking past them in the stores, the flicker damn near induces a seizure. ...well, maybe that's overstating it a bit, but the flicker is very noticeable. YMMV
