My son has a Panasonic 58" THX plasma and is incredible. I would rather have the plasma than LCD any day for myself. I will buy a plasma when the time comes unless they are not available. I haven't seen anything that has a better picture than a plasma brighter but not better. Most tv's in the store are set up way too bright but look better to people like that. Half life is 50000+ hours on plasma so no longer a issue. Fast movement is more realistic than the LCD's and yes I know they have continued to double the hrtz ratings, they are still trying to solve a problem.

Most people will buy LCD and top picture quality still goes to the plasma. Look at what Pioneer did with their plasma sets, nothing has ever has come close to their picture quality. ( I also know they are not making them anymore) And your right the days are numbered for plasma but picture quality and life are not an issue. Most professional reviewers will note that very little if any difference on 720p to 1080I are noticeable on anything smaller than 50"s. The biggest quality issue is the quality of signal from cable company's. Most time watching is spent on cable and the signal sucks.

What I recommend to my mom would be different than what I want. She just wouldn't care about it. Your Mom sounds like she doesn't care as long as it looks good. I wouldn't worry about it if she isn't
