I agree with you.

May have to clarify my position. What I meant was people assume that 1080i is a better picture than 720p. That's not necessarily true. Most noticeable is the flicker.

As someone else mentioned earlier, at 50 in and below there is no benefit to 1080i as 720p will provide all the info needed. Above 50 and things start to change.

Given the choice to watch a sporting event in 720p v 1080i I'll take 720p. There's a reason that Monday night football, FOX and ESPN broadcast 720p and not 1080i.
